Inverted Nipple Post Surgery Or Surgical Correction

!9#: Inverted Nipple Post Surgery Or Surgical Correction

Inverted Nipples is a condition whereby either one or both nipples can appear as a slit, hole or depression at the site of the nipple. The larger surrounding area known as the areola is normally unaffected. This condition is thought to affect between 5 and 10 percent of women. The condition can cause anxiety and often become a source of embarrassment going forward into adult life. Thankfully, with the advent of fine surgical techniques it is now possible to correct the inversion and importantly preserve sensitivity and the ability for the milk ducts to function as normal in a large number of cases. Of course, as with any surgical procedure there is a chance that the result may not be completely as both the client and surgeon would desire. In some cases sensitivity is lost and or the milk producing ducts can be damaged rendering them dysfunctional.

One of our customers recently contacted us to ask advice regarding the aftercare of her nipples as she had just had corrective surgery to overcome long-term nipple inversion. This lady was very pleased with the early outcome of her nipple correction and expressed her glee at having normal looking nipples for the first time in many years. However, she had been advised by her health care team not to wear a regular bra for the first few weeks (at least), as this would exert pressure upon her newly liberated nipples, possibly interfering with their healing and ideal positioning or placement. Of course, we could see the dilemma here as this is not only a delicate procedure but also that the nipples would tend to be rather sensitive and enlarged during the early days or weeks after such a procedure. The simple advice of 'not wearing a bra' was of course sound but impractical, especially when one is aiming to get back into a normal working / daily routine. In order to afford valuable protection from the pressure that would be exerted by wearing a regular bra and of course to avoid any potential risk from snagging, we advised her to try a little gizmo called Medela Breast Shells. These are ideal for such an application. Basically, the contoured shape of the Breastshells enables them to be hidden and concealed within the bra giving no clue to their placement. The centrally positioned hole in the back plate is large enough to be positioned completely over the nipple (which actually encourages the nipple to protrude rather than pushing down on them), whilst the detachable outer cover prevents the bra from making any contact, shielding the nipple(s) completely. The 'Breastshells' are ventilated to encourage valuable airflow keeping a healthy, non sweaty environment for the nipple(s) to continue healing whilst one goes about one's regular daily activities.

If surgical correction does not appeal, there is always the option to use a device known as the Niplette. This device can in most cases provide a complete remedy for inverted nipples. Worn secretly concealed within the bra and covered by small soft pads (as supplied). Small thimble shaped plastic cups are attached to the nipples, air is withdrawn to cause a vacuum and the nipple is pulled out into a position where it is held erect. this process is continued for several hours a day until the desired result is achieved.

When Breastfeeding Isn't Blissful

!9#: When Breastfeeding Isn't Blissful

I went on a lactation consult recently where a mom complained of severely sore nipples. While I was observing the latch she yelped out in pain. Sometimes sore nipples is an easy problem to fix; sometimes not. When ever mom is experiencing that much pain I usually look at the anatomy of the baby's mouth to rule out other causes. I look for a short tongue being restricted by a thin membrane that may or may not be seen. I look for an extremely high palate (roof of the mouth) which can interfere with comfortable placing of the nipple in the baby's mouth. Currently, I am finding a lot of babies who have a thin membranes underneath their top lip attached to the upper gum which restricts a tight seal at the breast, causing the unfortunate outcome of sore, cracked, beat up nipples.

These challenges can be a little trickier to fix than just putting a pillow underneath baby to help with positioning or teaching the baby to keep their lower lip down. These mothers struggle with getting their baby to breastfeed and, occasionally, there isn't a simple solution. Instead of a wonderful bonding moment, these moms have a baby who may cry a lot, while seeking more food, and finding that "right position" at the breast. Or mom is crying from the pain while struggling to get their baby to eat successfully. In trying to get food into the baby, she may also be pumping, finger feeding, bottle feeding or cup feeding, all the while dealing with healing her damaged nipples. It can be further discouraging when she sees other women have no pain, no struggle, no pumping, no "special techniques" - just mom, baby and breasts.

It is hard to convince every mom that she will need to do 5 extra things on top of all the other things she has to do in life in hopes that she can get through the storm, and hopefully leading to successful nursing. In MOST cases, if she is diligent, have found the right support for her specific situation, the baby will breastfeed. Some don't have the time or hope to wait it out. And in reality, who can blame these mothers?

Will this mom I saw in a recent consult breastfeed? I hope so. The best thing for a mom to do when having any difficulty is to get a supportive lactation consultant and a knowledgeable (in breastfeeding) pediatrician who can give the mom medical intervention if necessary. Just a glimmer of hope: MOST breastfeeding hardships that receive the "right intervention" and early on, resolve over time. Don't wait longer than a few days in hopes that things get better without some kind of professional involvement.

How Often To Breastfeed a Newborn

!9#: How Often To Breastfeed a Newborn

Your newborn should eat often and for as long as possible. The best thing for your baby in the first few days of life is breast milk so feedings will be at least eight to twelve times a day.Nursing Eight to twelve times a day works out to every two hours or so and the clock starts at the beginning of the feeding. This will make it feel like you are constantly nursing at first.

The substance that your baby will be consuming when nursing for the first few days is called colostrum. It is actually not breast milk yet. Colostrum is packed full of immune boosters and proteins essential for the transition from the safety of the womb into the real world.

When your milk starts to come in, feedings will become longer at first. Your baby will begin to develop more of an appetite and it is important to allow the feeding to go as long as necessary. The milk that comes down at the very end of the feeding is called the hind milk and there are essential fats in this milk that you don't want to deprave the baby of. At this point your feedings will still be at least thirty minutes at a time and as frequent as eight to twelve times a day.

You will know your baby is getting enough to eat by looking at the diapers. If you are getting a wet diaper after feedings, your baby is eating enough. There is a chart that your doctor might give you before you take your baby home that shows how many wet diapers to expect during the first few months. It is important to keep a good count of the wet and dirty diapers so you know that your baby is eating properly.

A common concern with nursing mothers is that the baby is not getting enough to eat. Breast milk digests much faster than formula so breastfed babies tend to get hungry faster than formula fed babies. Digestion causes an empty belly and an empty belly in a newborn means that the hunger is back. This is why a nursing mother could think that she is not producing enough milk to satisfy her baby. The time for concern is when your baby has a dry diaper for an extended period of time.

Your baby will tell you when the hunger strikes and you will learn very quickly what the signs are. Sucking or even an open mouth could mean it is feeding time again. You should not wait until the cry starts because that may be a sign you waited too long.

Breast Feeding

!9# Breast Feeding

[if ]

Every new mother has it ingrained in her that breast feeding is the best source of nourishment for her child. This is Nature's gift that is abundant in nutrients, anti-bodies and nourishment. If you feel that it is inconvenient (like some mothers do), remember you are saved the hassle of sterilizing bottles, mixing formula in the middle of the night as well as it helps you get the rest your body needs and delays your menstrual cycle.

Before you begin breast feeding the child, wash your hands well. You will need to guide the nipple into your baby's mouth. Put it in as far as it will comfortably go. This will enable the baby's sucking motion to work on the milk ducts in your breast. You can help baby latch on by keeping its nose touching your breast. How you hold your baby's head when breast feeding is important. The baby should not have to strain to get to you. The cradle position says the baby's head should be in crook of your arm. The baby's back and bottom is supported on your arm and the child will be lying down sideways. Ensure your breast is right in front of the baby's face.

Another good position when feeding baby, is to tuck your baby under your arm like a handbag. Cradle baby's head in your palm and support the back and body with your forearm. This position is excellent for mothers recovering from C-sections. You could also lie down on your side on the bed propping yourself up on some pillows. Keep your baby on its side and facing you. This is a great position for those recovering from an episiotomy.

In the beginning you will have to keep feeding baby as many times as he demands. This could be as many as 8-12 times a day. Gradually the child will fall into a pattern and the feeding cycle falls into place. Breast feeding can also lead to sore nipples. This is largely because the baby is not positioned properly. Also be sure to check out Breast feeding the baby for more and extensive information about breast feeding the baby. Make sure you baby latches on in the right way. Also if you are using soothing creams like lanolin, make sure you wash it off thoroughly before you place your breast in the baby's mouth. All mothers worry about whether they will have enough milk to keep feeding the baby. A breast feeding mother should have a calcium heavy diet. Also include a lot of fruits and vegetables as well as cereals, meat, dairy and its products in your diet.

Essential Baby Equipment - What You Need For a Happy Baby & Mommy

!9# Essential Baby Equipment - What You Need For a Happy Baby & Mommy

[if ]
[endif]

Baby Equipment can cover a vast variety of areas when it comes to looking after your baby. What is essential can also be another mind field to a new mother and we can often get lost in the look of something or the want for it, rather than actually needing it. That can lead to a lot of wasted money many people can't afford and also may result in forgetting the crucials.

In all honesty my idea of essential is completely different to most. I never had a crib or a changing station or a nursing chair. In fact my most expensive purchase was reusable diapers.

I do however consider some items essential for a baby and have a few that many people seem to never own. This is my essential list of baby equipment:

Clothing - Every baby needs clothes and lots of them! I had my fair share of second hand items from eBay and also hand me downs from when my Husband was a little boy, however I was not prepared for how messy my little boy was going to be. My son unfortunately had some acid reflux issues and for the first year of life was constantly throwing up and I had to change him every 5 minutes. Make sure that when you buy clothing you buy a lot of it. You can never have too much! Getting second hand is a great way to go and eBay is a good choice for this. eBay is also great because you can often get very cheap new items too. I bought a lot of new organic items for my son at very cheap prices.

Car seat - A car seat is another essential item. You will need it as soon as baby is born if you have a hospital birth, so this is definitely a piece of equipment you want ready!

Baby sling - I found a baby sling to one of the most essential items I could own. I have used it nearly everyday. My son was very colicky when he was a newborn and for the first 6 months or so and the only thing that really soothed him was taking him for walks in a sling or walking around the house with him in a sling. A sling is also a great way to keep your son close to you for the first 6 months of life (considered the In-Arms phase). Your baby loves being closed to you and you will not spoil him for giving him what he needs.

Muslins/Cloths - In relation to my son's acid reflux, a lot of mop cloths were needed! I was lucky to have lots of spare from buying lots for my son's diapers. Try to get a good back up stock of mops. Babies are inevitably messy little things and this will save you have to do washing everyday. Cloths are also great for mopping up once your baby is grown so don't think this is a wasteful expense - it isn't!

Nursing pads - If you intend on breastfeeding or if not, nursing pads are really quite crucial. Your breasts will leak and being very full to begin with and you will need a continuous supply of pads to help absorb it!

Breast pump - This is on the essential list because it was essential for me the first week. I managed to get Mastitis where your breasts get very full, lumpy and you feel like you have been hit by the flu. I needed a pump to help relief some of the excess milk I was producing. Despite nursing my son, I still had problems. I also found (Even though this is not recommended in the first 6 weeks) that pumping milk and putting in the fridge allowed my Husband to feed our son while I got have a nice 4 hour nap during the day. You need as much as rest as you can so every little helps!

This is my personal list of essential items. It may not be what everyone else's is but other items I had did not get used instantly or as often as the ones mentioned here. Hope it helps.

Tips For Breast Feeding Mothers

!9# Tips For Breast Feeding Mothers

[if ]
[endif]

For many mothers, it is a wonderful thing for them to be able to breastfeed their children, however, sometimes this is not always possible due to health reason and sometimes it is by choice.

Nevertheless, if you are someone who have made the choice of nursing your child and you are able to do so, throughout this time, the following suggestions may be helpful.

Relax

If you are a new mother, it is understandable if you are a bit nervous at first and this may certainly be the case if, you are doing do in the present of the nurses, for the first time. Relax and if you need any help, you can always ask them to help.

Additionally, by relaxing, the baby would also do the same thing and the milk will flow a lot easier.

Introduce Solids

As the baby grows, it is best to introduce solid foods to him/her around the time that the health care workers recommends, instead of putting it off.

This does not mean that your end of feeding him/her in this way has arrived, no, both sets of food would be able to complement each other for a while longer.

Eat

If you find yourself a bit hungrier, or perhaps eating a lot more than you usually do, do not panic, most like it is just the body seeking to replace what was taken out when the baby hand eaten.

Therefore, do not be afraid, go ahead and eat, because your body needs it. Additionally, do not forget to eat a lot of the type of foods, such as oats, that will help to produce more milk.

Additionally, multivitamins may also be helpful, but as with everything else that is written her, it is always best to talk with your health care provider about things along this line.

As you would have probably heard, some, if not all of the things that you eat and drink would affect the milk and therefore affect the baby. However, all children are not the say and treading cautiously would certainly be a good way to go.

Different Positions

It is okay to try different nursing positions to see which one would work best for you and your little one. However, as he/she grows, the positions may change and eventually, both of you may decide on just one. On the other hand though, with every child being different, who know what would be in store for both of you where this is concerned?

With more mothers have to go to work almost immediately after birth, is that mothers with a single provider of childcare or a working mother who called her husband home, has something to do with them that their child gets the right support provided at work. Breast milk storage bags and pumps up to this you can be there when the mother is not helping.

The Medela milk storage bag has to be pumped directly into and then storedfor future use makes them very comfortable. These 5 oz bags are the perfect size to feed a baby. If you use more than 5 ounces a feeding, then fills it half way works just as well and saves on the thawing time too.

If you need more milk storage, Lansinoh bag holds up to 10 grams and has a double zipper closure. This bag makes it much safer for freezing purposes and reduces the likelihood of waste. The only problem is that the bag Lansinohcan not directly into the Medela bags can be pumped.

There have been reports of both types of bags lost, but later it was learned that this was due to overcrowding. Since the freezing point of an expansion of the liquid causes, this would be a bag that was used in this way occur. Of the two has a better closure of the bag Lansinoh for freezing and storage of large capacity.

While both of their pockets and disadvantage have their good qualities, it is ultimately up to you the user. Convenience ofMedela pumps directly as an offer or closing the secure storage and a greater ability to Lansinoh bag. The choice is yours.
